Hyderabad: Gujarat Chief Minister and Bharatiya Janata Party's poll panel chiefNarendra Modi kicked off party's southern campaign with a mega rally at LB stadium in Hyderabad on Sunday. Making a very significant political statement, Modi through his speech reached out to the Telegu Desam Party, asking for its help to get rid of the Congress.

The Chief Minister had even chanted US President Barack Obama's war cry to flag off the party's election campaign and asked people to echo him: "Yes, we can! Yes, we will do!"

Apart from making the crowd chant Obama's change mantra and his rhetoric on the Congress's foreign policies, Modi's political intent in his public meeting was clear and apparent.

With the Congress having played the Telangana card, Modi used the opportunity to explore possible political allies for the BJP in Andhra. He held out an olive branch to the state's main Opposition party TDP as a potential ally that could perhaps help the BJP mop up a few seats in Telangana and Andhra regions or sound out a potential post-poll ally.

He made sure his first speech as the BJP's poll campaign chief was all inclusive with appreciation not just for BJP chief ministers Shivraj Singh Chauhan, Raman Singh but also Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa.

Having reached out to the regional satraps, Modi then trained his guns on the Congress, especially the UPA's policy on Pakistan and China. He said, "It is unfortunate that the UPA government decided to withdraw forces after the Chinese Army intruded."

Realising the BJP's limited political footprint down south, Modi has reached out to a regional satrap as the TDP has in the past lent support to the NDA.

New Delhi: Congress leader Digvijaya Singh on Friday said that the process of consulation in Telangana issue is over and time has come to take a decision. Sources says Digvijaya, Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde and Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad are against the formation of Telangana. Some Congress leaders feel that Telangana formation will set a wrong precedence, sources add.

Congress President Sonia Gandhi met Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Kiran Kumar Reddy at her residence in New Delhi to discuss Telangana.

State PCC chief Botsa Satyanarayana and Deputy Chief Minister Damodar Rajnarasimha will also meet the Congress high command in New Delhi.


With the possibility of a favorable decision on Telangana, politicians from other regions of Andhra Pradesh including Rayalseema have upped their ante. Three Congress MLA and 16 MLAs of Jagan Mohan Reddy's YSR Congress resigned on Thursday evening, demanding a united Andhra.

Except YSR Congress' floor leader YS Vijayamma, all the other 16 MLAs have "quit" their posts "individually", YSR Congress sources said. Several YSRCP MLAs said they have quit over the reported move to divide Andhra Pradesh.

Alleging that Congress is more concerned about its political future in deciding the Telangana issue, they said Congress should first spell out its stance over the matter and consult all parties before taking any decision.

Meanwhile, Congress MLA from Kamalapuram in Kadapa district G Veerasiva Reddy also said he has resigned from his post and from the party.

However, with Assembly elections less than a year away, it is unlikely that the Speaker would decide on the "resignations".

Dismissing the resignations by YSRCP MLAs as political opportunism, PCC chief Botsa Satyanarayana said the Jaganmohan Reddy-led party should first announce its own stance on the Telangana issue.

The resignations may put pressure on the legislators from Rayalaseema and coastal Andhra in the event of the Centre taking a favourable decision on Telangana.

The competitive resignations are not new in Andhra Pradesh ever since the Telangana issue took the centre-stage in 2009.

The Chief Minister, PCC president and Deputy Chief Minister C Damodar Rajanarasimha are expected to take part in consultations being undertaken by the Congress high command.

The ministers from Rayalaseema and coastal Andhra, who have decided to pursue the demand for undivided state, have begun leaving for Delhi to meet Union Ministers and MPs from the regions.

Some of the Andhra Pradesh ministers and MLAs from Telangana region had a meeting at the residence of state Panchayat Raj minister K Jana Reddy in Hyderabad on Thursday evening.

Jana Reddy said they would also go to Delhi if necessary to keep up the pressure on high command for separate Telangana.

The Congress Core Group had discussed the Telangana issue earlier this month and decided to refer the long-pending matter to the Congress Working Committee for a final view.

The reports said the Congress Working Committee, the party's highest decision-making body, is likely to meet by this month-end.

కాంగ్రెస్ పార్టీ డ్రామాలు కొత్తపుంతలు తొక్కుతున్నాయి. నిన్నటిదాకా అవునని కాని, కాదు అని చెప్పకుండా మూతి ముడుచుకొని ఉన్న కాంగ్రెస్ ఒకే రోజు సి డబ్ల్యు సి, యుపిఎ సమన్వయ భేటి నిర్వహించి తెలంగాణకు అనుకూల తీర్మానాలు చేశారు. 

            ఇక్కడే అసలు నాటకం మొదలయ్యింది. అంతవరకు తెలంగాణకు అంగీకరిస్తున్నామని చెప్పిన సీమంధ్రులు ఉద్యమ(?) బాట పట్టారు. ఉద్యమం అంటే ఏమిటో కాదు వారి దృష్టిలో విద్వంసమే..! వారి ఆరాటం పరమార్ధం ఏమిటంటే ఎలాగో రాష్ట్రం విడిపోతుంది, వాళ్లకు దక్కని హైదరాబాద్ అవతలి వాళ్ళకు కుడా దక్కకుండా చెయ్యాలనే కుట్ర, సీమంద్ర నాయకులు హైదరాబాద్ ను తెలంగాణా ప్రజలు వదులుకొని కరీంనగర్, వరంగల్ లో ఎక్కడైనా రాజధాని పెట్టుకొమ్మని అంటున్నారు... 

                   అయితే ఈ కథ స్క్రీన్ ప్లే దర్శకత్వం అంతా సి ఎం, ఫై సి సి చీఫ్ బుర్రల్లోనించి పుట్టిందే.. వై సి పీ కి ఉన్న అతికొద్దిమంది నాయకులూ కుడా తెలంగాణా లో కాలి అవడంతో వాళ్ళు సీమంద్ర జండా పట్టుకున్నారు, సమైక్యంద్ర కోసం రాజీనామాలు చేసి విధ్వంసాలు మొదలుపెట్టారు, ఇప్పుడు కేంద్రం గతంలో మాదిరిగా వెనక్కి వెల్లదని వాళ్ళకు కుడా తెలుసు మరి అలాంటప్పుడు ఉద్యమం ఎందుకు అంటే...2014 ఎన్నికలలో లాభం పొందాలి కదా... అలాగే వై ఎస్ అర్ చనిపోయినప్పుడు టి వి లో ఆ వార్త చూస్తూ గుండె పోటు వచ్చి మరణించారని లిస్టు తయరుచేసినట్టే, ఇప్పుడు కుడా సమైక్యంద్ర కోసం టి వి చూస్తూ మరణించారంటూ లిస్టు తయారు చేస్తున్నారు మీడియా వారు... ఇదంతా ఎన్దుకొసమంటే 2014 లో కాంగ్రెస్ మల్లి అధికారంలోకి రావాలి. వై సి పీ తో ఇప్పటికే అవగాహన కుదుర్చుకున్నారు కాబట్టే తెలంగాణా పై ప్రకటన చేసారు. 2014 లో కాంగ్రెస్ కు ఓటు వేసిన, వై సి పీ కి వేసినా అది కాంగ్రెస్ కు వేసినట్టే. ఇప్పుడు నడిపిస్తున్న ఉద్యమం ద్వారా వై సి పీ ని సీమంద్రలో బలపరచడం ద్వారా 2014 లో లాభం పొందవచ్చానేది కాంగ్రెస్ వ్యూహం ... 

                మరి టి డి పీ ఎం చేస్తున్నట్లు? తెలంగాణా రాకుండా చివరివరకు కాంగ్రెస్ పెద్దలకు ఫోన్లు చేస్తూ ప్రదేయ పడ్డాడట బాబు, ఒక ఆంగ్ల పత్రిక వెల్లడించిన విషయం ఇది, కాంగ్రెస్ పార్టీ నిర్ణయం తీసుకున్నాక ప్రెస్ మీట్ పెట్టి రెండు రాష్ట్రాలు సక్యతతో ఉండాలని సీమంద్రకు 5 లక్షల కోట్ల ప్యాకేజ్ ఇవ్వాలని చెప్పి మొఖం చాటేశాడు. ఇక మిగతా పని ఆ పార్టీ సీమంద్ర నాయకులూ చూసుకుంటున్నారు, బాబు మార్గదర్శనంలో రాజీనామాలు చేసారు, ఇలాగు రాష్ట్ర ఏర్పాటు ఆగదు కాబట్టి హైదరాబాద్ ను కేంద్ర పాలిత ప్రాంతంగా చేయించేందుకు కృషి చేస్తున్నాడు. 

మొత్తంగా అన్ని పార్టీల అసలు రంగులు బయట పడుతున్న ప్రస్తుత తరుణంలో...  తెలంగాణా కాంగ్రెస్ నాయకుల మాటలు కోటలు దాటుతున్నాయి. తెలంగాణ మేమే తెచ్చామ్, సోనియమ్మతో మాట్లాడి తెచ్చాం, కె సి అర్ నోటిని అదుపులో పెట్టుకోవాలని అంటూ, సీమందృ లపై తెగ సానుభూతి కురిపిస్తున్నరు, గడచిన 12 ఏళ్ళ ఉద్యమంలో ఒకే ఒక సభపెట్టి మేమే తెలంగాణా తెచ్చాం అని చంకలు గుద్దుకునే వారు 1000 మంది చనిపోక ముందు సోనియా తో ఎందుకు మాట్లాడి తెలంగాణా తేలేదు..? ఇవ్వాళ్ళ ఉద్యమ ఫలితమే తెలంగాణ రాష్ట్రం అంటే చిర్రు బుర్రు లాడుతున్న ఈ నాయకులు ఎప్పుడు ఉద్యమం చేసారు..?  వీళ్ళు తెలంగాణా ఏర్పడే వరకూ తెలంగాణ కు వ్యతిరేఖమే, సి ఎం కు అనుకూలం, ఇంకా కొంతమైంది నాయకులైతే దిగజారి మాట్లాడి తెలంగాణా నాయకులంటే బానిస మనస్తత్వమ్ కల్గినవారని నిరూపించారు, వీళ్ళ చేతుల్లో రేపు కొత్తగా ఏర్పడబోయే రాష్ట్రాన్ని పెడితే కుక్కలు చింపిన విస్తరిగా చేస్తారు, వీళ్ళు ఇప్పుడే కె సి అర్ ను పక్కకు నెట్టే ప్రయత్నం చేస్తున్నారు, రేపు ఉద్యమకారులను ఇలాగె పక్కకు నేట్టేస్తారేమో, తెలంగాణ ఉద్యమం ఇక్కడితో ముగుసిపోలేదు, ఈ బానిస నాయకత్వం పోయేవరకు, మనం కోరుకున్న అన్ని కోరికలు తీరేవరకు పోరాడాలి.. ఇది అంతం కాదు ఇదే నిజమైన ఆరంభం...

రాయలసీమలకు ఒక అధ్బుతమైన అవకాశం. ఆ ప్రాంతం అబివృద్ది చెందడానికి వచ్చిన వరంగా భావించాలి. నిజమే. కొన్ని కష్టాలు, నష్టాలు ఉంటాయి. ఇప్పుడు ఈ పరిస్థితికి వై.ఎస్.రాజశేఖరరెడ్డి కారణమా?చంద్రబాబు కారణమా?సోనియాగాంధీ కారణమా?లేక ఇంకా వేరే ఎవరైనా కారణమా?అన్న చర్చలో పెద్దగా ప్రయోజనం ఉండదు. అది కేవలం చరిత్రగా మిగిలిపోతోంది. ఎఐసిసి అదినేత్రి సోనియాగాంధీ ధృడ నిర్ణయం తీసుకోవడానికి రాష్ట్ర నాయకులంతా బాధ్యత వహించవలసిందే.కాంగ్రెస్ హై కమాండ్ ఉన్నంతలో బెటర్ గానే నిర్ణయం చేసినట్లు కనబడుతుంది.సీమాంద్ర కేంద్ర మంత్రులు పల్లంరాజు, చిరంజీవి,కావూరి, పురందేశ్వరి, జెడి శీలం వంటివారు సోనియాగాందీని కలిసినప్పుడు ఆమె ఎలాంటి శషబిషలు లేకుండా తన అబిప్రాయాలను కుండబద్దలు కొట్టినట్లు చెప్పారట.నిర్ణయం తీసుకున్నాక వచ్చి ఏమి చెప్పినా ఏమి చేయగలమని ప్రశ్నించారట. అదిష్టానం మాటకు కట్టుబడి ఉంటామని చెప్పారు కదా అని అన్నారట.అంతేకాదు.సీమాంధ్ర ప్రజలకు సంబంధించిన అన్ని సమస్యలను పరిష్కరిస్తామని, పార్లమెంటులో చర్చకు వచ్చినప్పుడు మీ కోర్కెలన్నిటిని పెట్టండి , వాటిని తీర్చడానికి ప్రయత్నిస్తామని అన్నారని కదనం. సీమాంధ్ర లో కొన్ని రోజులు ఆందోళనలు ఉండవచ్చు. బిల్లు పార్లమెంటులో పూర్తి అయి, ఆ తర్వాత శాసనసభకు వచ్చి వెళ్లేంతవరకు కొంత ఉద్రిక్త వాతావరణం ఉండవచ్చు.కాని ఇప్పుడు ఇది తెలివైన పని కాదని చెప్పాలి.దిగ్విజయ్ సింగ్ చెప్పినట్లు గా సుదీర్గకాలంగా ఉన్న డిమాండును గౌరవించడం అయి ఉండవచ్చు. అంత మాత్రాన ఇందులో రాజకీయ కోణం లేదంటే ఎవరూ నమ్మరు. అన్ని లెక్కలు వేసుకునే , ఆయా రాజకీయ పార్టీలను ఎలా దెబ్బతీయవచ్చన్న వ్యూహంతోనే తెలంగాణ ప్రకటన చేశారు. అయితే గతంలో మాదిరి కాకుండా, ఇందులో అన్ని పక్షాలను భాగస్వాములను చేయడం మంచి పద్దతే. మన రాష్ట్ర రాజకీయ నాయకులు చాలామంది లోపల ఒకటి, బయట ఒకటి చెప్పడం అలవాటైపోయింది. దాని ఫలితమే ఈ పరిణామం అని చెప్పక తప్పదు. పులి కావాలి..పులి కావాలి.. పార్టీలు అడిగితే ముందు ఆశ్చర్యపోయారు.ఆ తర్వాత ఇస్తే పోలా అనుకున్నారు. చివరికి ఇచ్చేసరికి దానిని ఎలా భరించాలో తెలియని పరిస్థితిలో రాజకీయ పార్టీలు పడ్డాయి. తెలంగాణ పాయింటుతోనే రాజకీయం నడిపిన టిఆర్ఎస్ ను కొంతమేర కుదేలు చేశారు.టిఆర్ఎస్ ను కాంగ్రెస్ లో విలీనం చేయడానికి సిద్దమేనని కెసిఆర్ ప్రకటించవలసి వచ్చింది. ప్రజారాజ్యం పార్టీని ఇప్పటికే కలుపుకున్న కాంగ్రెస్ పార్టీ కనుక టిఆర్ఎస్ ను కలుపుకుంటే తెలంగాణలో మరింత బలోపేతం అవుతుంది. అయితే టిఆర్ఎస్ తో సంబందం లేకుండా కాంగ్రెస్ సొంతంగా తెలంగాణ ఇస్తున్నదన్న భావన కల్పించడంలో సఫలం అయ్యారని చెప్పాలి. కిందటిసారి కెసిఆర్ ఇస్తున్నట్లు ప్రకటించడం వల్ల కాంగ్రెస్ కు బాగా నష్టం జరిగింది.ఈసారి ఆ తప్పు చేయకుండా జాగ్రత్తపడ్డారు. ఇక తెలుగుదేశం పార్టీ కూడా తెలంగాణ రావడానికి కారణమే అయినా, ఆ క్రెడిట్ వారికి పూర్తిగా దక్కే పరిస్థితి లేదు. బిజెపి ఇంకా తెలంగాణలో పుంజుకోకముందే తెలంగాణ నిర్ణయం తీసుకుంది.అయితే టిడిపి, బిజెపిలు భవిష్యత్తులో కలిసే అవకాశం ఉ ఉంటుందా అన్న చర్చ కూడా ఉంది. ఇక తెలంగాణలో వై.ఎస్.ఆర్.కాంగ్రెస్ కోలుకోలేని విదంగా దెబ్బతింది.ఇన్ని రకాలుగా తెలంగాణలో పైచేయిగా ఉన్న కాంగ్రెస్ సీమాంధ్రలో కొంత నష్ట పోతుంది. అయితే పోలవరం ప్రాజెక్టుకు జాతీయ ప్రాజెక్టు హోదా ఇవ్వడం, హైదరాబాద్ ను ఉమ్మడి రాజధానిగా చేయడం ద్వారా మరీ ఎక్కువ నిరసన రాకుండా జాగ్రత్తపడినట్లయింది.ఇదే సమయంలో మరిన్ని సీమాంద్ర డిమాండ్లను తీర్చడానికి కాంగ్రెస్ సిద్దం కావచ్చు.పైగా అక్కడ వై.ఎస్.ఆర్.కాంగ్రెస్, టిడిపిల మధ్య పోరులో వై.ఎస్ ఆర్.కాంగ్రెస్ ది పైచేయి అయితే అది అంతిమంగా కాంగ్రెస్ కు ఉపయోగపడవచ్చు. టిడిపి గెలిస్తే , ఆ తర్వాత కాలంలో మళ్లీ నిలదొక్కుకోవడానికి ప్రయత్నిస్తుంది.ఎక్కడో ఒక చోట నష్టం తప్పదు కనుకే కాంగ్రెస్ ఈ నిర్ణయానికి సిద్దం అయింది.ఈ తరుణంలో సీమాంధ్ర కాంగ్రెస్ నేతలు ఆ ప్రాంతానికి అధిక లాభం చేకూరే విధంగా కేంద్రంపై ఒత్తిడి తేవాలి. తొమ్మిది మంది మంత్రులు ఉన్నారు.దాదాపు జిల్లాకు ఒకరు చొప్పున ఉన్నట్లు లెక్క.అందువల్ల వారంతా పూనుకుని నిర్దిష్ట ప్రతిపాదనలతో కేంద్రం నుంచి స్కీములు సంపాదించాలి.రాజధాని ఒక చోట పెడితే , మరో చోట హైకోర్టు ఉండాలి. అలాగే అనంతపురంలో మాన్యుఫాక్చరింగ్ యూనిట్ లు వచ్చేలా చూడాలి. తీర ప్రాంతంలో తత్సంబంధిత పరిశ్రమలు రావాలి.వాన్ పిక్ కోసం ఇప్పటికే వేల ఎకరాలు సేకరించారు. జగన్ కేసులో ఒక విధంగా చెప్పాలంటే వాన్ పిక్ పారిశ్రామికవేత్త నిమ్మగడ్డ ప్రసాద్ ను జైలులో పెట్టి హింసిస్తున్నారు.రాజకీయంగా మారిన ఈ కేసులో సిబిఐ తీరు కూడా సరిగా లేదన్న విమర్శలు ఉన్నాయి. న్యాయ వ్యవస్థ కూడా వీరికి ఎందుకు బెయిల్ ఇవ్వడం లేదో అర్దం కాదు. ఇప్పుడు ఆయన సేకరించిన భూములు ఆ ప్రాంతంలో అబివృద్దికి ఉపయోగపడవచ్చు.రాజశేఖరరెడ్డి అవినీతి సంగతి ఎలా ఉన్నా రాయలసీమ, కోస్తా ఆంధ్రలో పోలవరం, పులిచింతల వంటి ప్రాజెక్టులు, హంద్రినీవా, గాలేరు-నగరి వంటి ప్రాజెక్టులో చేపట్టి మంచి పనిచేశారు. ఇప్పుడు అవన్ని పూర్తి అయ్యేలా చూడవలసిన అవసరం ఉంది. అలాగే ఒక అంతర్జాతీయ విమానాశ్రయం రావాలి. ఈసారి అబివృద్ది వికేంద్రీకరించకపోతే మళ్లీ సమస్యలు వస్తాయి.ఇప్పటికే హైదరాబాద్ లోనే అంతా కేంద్రీకరించి అనవసరంగా సమస్యలు తెచ్చుకున్నాం.ఈసారి ఆ పరిస్థితి ఉండకూడదు.సీమాంధ్ర రాష్ట్రంలో ముందుగా కొన్ని కష్టనష్టాలు ఉంటాయి. కాని కష్టపడితే భవిష్యత్తు ఉంటుంది.కాకపోతే నాయకులు ప్రజలను సానుకూల ధోరణితో ముందుకు తీసుకు వెళ్లాలి. అందుకు సరైన నాయకత్వం అవసరం.అప్పుడే సీమాంద్ర అభివృద్దికి ఆస్కారం ఉంటుంది.సంక్షోభాల నుంచే నాయకులు పుడతారు. సంక్షోభాల నుంచే అబివృద్ది మొదలవుతుంది.ఇప్పుడు దీనిని సీమాంధ్ర ప్రజలు సువర్ణావకాశంగా మార్చుకోవాలి.అనవసర విబేధాలు పెంచుకోకుండా, తెలంగాణ ప్రజలతో కలివిడిగా ఉంటూ , ఇప్పుడు రెండు రాష్ట్రాలు సమగ్రాభివృద్ది చెందడమే లక్ష్యంగా ఉండాలి.అప్పుడే ఈ విభజనకు సార్ధకత ఉంటుంది.

The Growing Irrelevance of Anna Hazare

Two years ago Anna Hazare was riding a wave that he had generated almost single-handedly, threatening to sweep the UPA out of its fortified ivory tower. The groundswell of support for his Jan Lokpal mission had reached levels of support that Gandhiji’s satyagraha movement had attained during the battle for independence from the British Raj. Anna had become another Gandhi in his uncompromising opposition to violence and untruth. The Manmohan Singh government apart, even entrenched anarchists like Arundhati Roy felt threatened by him as he was stealing the limelight from their exertions and occupying prime time on TV channels. Arundhati Roy felt compelled to write an article “I’d rather not be Anna,” dutifully published by that establishmentarian newspaper “The Hindu” on 21st August 2011. Hazare was then in the middle of his 13-day fast at Ramlila Maidan. Roy, from the commanding heights of a Booker winner, roundly castigated the 74 year old Gandhian in impeccable English, even pointing her needle of suspicion on a possible collusion between the 2G-scam-tainted journalists-lobbyists and captains of corporate India, and Anna Hazare, to divert attention from their shenanigans. Roy writes in her article:

“Remember the campaign for the Jan Lokpal Bill gathered steam around the same time as embarrassing revelations by Wikileaks and a series of scams, including the 2G spectrum scam, broke, in which major corporations, senior journalists, and government ministers and politicians from the Congress as well as the BJP seem to have colluded in various ways as hundreds of thousands of crores of rupees were being siphoned off from the public exchequer. For the first time in years, journalist-lobbyists were disgraced and it seemed as if some major Captains of Corporate India could actually end up in prison. Perfect timing for a people’s anti-corruption agitation. Or was it?”

Anna Hazare does not possess her facility with words, especially of the English language. He is just a semi-literate villager, from a nondescript village in Maharashtra; an ex-Havildar of the Indian Army, honourably discharged after service with a minor medal. He cannot claim to have won the Booker or any other glittering award, nor has he written such scathing attacks on the establishments worldwide as Ms Roy has in “The Algebra of Infinite Justice” and “An Ordinary Person’s Guide to Empire”, books for which she must have received hefty sums from publishers. Such is her influence in the literary world that a publisher had paid a royal sum even before the novel “The God of Small Things” was written. I am not asking whose money owns these publishing firms, but you can bet that some “Captains of the Corporate” world would have had something to do with them. Of course, what she did with all that money is not my concern. The lady from Ayemenem is certainly entitled to use it in whichever way she likes.

But I know what Anna Hazare did with the meagre retirement fund that he received after being discharged from the army. He spent it all on his village Ralegan Siddhi in an attempt to better the lives of his fellow villagers. Today Ralegan Siddhi is a model village from where alcohol has been banished, where primary healthcare centres function, where schools have teachers and students. Anna lives amidst his people, in an 8 x 10 feet room in the village temple, and his possessions would probably be less than what a sadhu in the upper Himalayas would have. Some people have complained that he is a dictator and has forced the villagers to abjure alcohol and other evils. I cannot understand how an unarmed man, without a gang of enforcers, can make a whole village to follow his diktats. Unless it is some moral pressure that only those who have led a moral life can command. I don’t know how Ayemenem is doing, because its most famous resident has not lived there for a very long time, and has not enlightened us about its condition. Maybe Ms Roy should pay a visit to both Anna’s village and her own.

However, a movement that had begun with so much promise and had thrown up such unlikely leaders as Arvind Kejriwal and what was then known as “Team Anna,” has since petered out into a mild ripple instead of the tsunami that it could have become. Like the credit that is due to him for initiating and providing the first thrust to a serious challenge to the entrenched oligarchy of politicians, bureaucrats and the captains of industry, Anna Hazare will also have to take the responsibility for frittering away that momentum and jettisoning the entire enterprise midstream. After breaking his indefinite fast at Ramlila Maidan on 28thAugust, 2011, he was taken to Medanta Hospital, Gurgaon for post-fast treatment and recovery. Maybe he went into deep sleep in the comfort of one of the most modern medical institutions in the country, and woke up with a bout of amnesia. His breaking up with Arvind Kejriwal defies understanding and his subsequent utterances on electoral politics have left most of his followers confused. His non-stop harping on the Jan Lokpal Bill has begun to sound tiresome, which can be seen from the dwindling support that he now gets from the aam aadmi.

When he went on his fast to force the government to implement the Jan Lokpal Bill, the future political roadmap had not been outlined. However, it was obvious from the reaction of the Congress and its allies that the battle would have to be fought and won in the arena of electoral politics and not through fasts-unto-death and such agitations. The moral pressure that a fast exerts can only have limited success. Eventually, real change can only come if moral people sit in the legislatures and offices of governance. The likes of Manish Tewari and Kapil Sibal, with their supercilious smirks, kept taunting “Team Anna” to fight them politically by standing as electoral candidates. The sickening arrogance of these leaders was asking for a rise in the collective conscience of the nation that would wipe the smirk from off their faces. Anna and his team had just begun to stir that collective conscience, when he, of all the people, decided to turn his back on electoral politics and left the movement high and dry. The break-up with Arvind Kejriwal on the latter having formed the Aam Aadmi Party, and launching his own Janatantra Morcha are inexplicable actions that defy reason. By announcing that the Janatantra Morcha will not become a political party or participate in elections, and by dissociating with Kejriwal, he has handed over the advantage to the Sibals and the Tewaris. With such utterances as “PM should be directly elected by the people” while abjuring electoral politics, he is continuing to confuse and confound his admirers. It is not clear as to whose advice he listens to. Kiran Bedi has continued to be by his side and so is Gen. V. K. Singh. But with every passing day the Anna Hazare phenomenon is fading into irrelevance.

Rolling over the Social Networking site and scaling up on the doodles and cartoons, we have witnessed Narendra Modiprogressing online from almost a year now. Offline too, he has being wooing the Indians from years through Gujarat’s alleyways and roads. Once just a humble Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) cadre, the Gujarat CM has now been anointed as the prime lead for the 2014 Lok Sabha and Assembly Elections. Finally, BJP has done the predictable but in the process, the party has also done the improbable – sidelining the patriarch, the man who had laid the very foundation of the party with Atal Bihari Vajpayee – “Lal Krishna Advani.”

Going by the flashbacks, Modi became a household name after the Godhra Riots of 2002. It may seem very paradoxical now but it was Advani who had saved Modi when the then PM AB Vajpayee decided to sack Modi post the riots. Today, the ailing leader finds “The Gujarat ka Gaurav” as his nemesis and so for the very first time in his career, the senior leader skipped the National BJP executive meet in Goa. Leaders not attending the meet besides the octogenarian leader were the BJP regulars Uma Bharti, Jaswant Singh, Shatrughan Sinha and Yashwant Singh who were also not seen at the venue. But that doesn’t stop the uproar of the emerging NaMo to make a mark on the state-run politics, does it? And if not Modi, then who else?

BJP with or without Advani did not had much options left because neither Advani, Arun Jaitley, Shivraj Chauhan nor Sushma Swaraj in the coming elections would be able to gather as much votes for BJP as Narendra Modi can. Besides, although he might not be appreciated amongst few, post his victory in the state elections the party workers have been chanting his name to be the front face of the 2014 polls. Thus, it became a safe game for the BJP President and his men to gamble on the Gujarat man rather than betting on the “wait and watch” game.

Had LK Advani given his personal blessings to him, it would have been a “sone pe suhaga” event for Mr. Modi but since Advani was not at the event and has expressed the opposite sentiments, it is quite obvious that Modi will not only have to prove the entire nation but also his own party men. Modi knows that if BJP doesn’t come in majority in the next polls and he is not able to give his best, then the BJP doors will be practically closed for him. No wonder, Modi has to mollify the veteran leader and also earn the likings of Sushma Swaraj.

The alliance on the other hand seems to be happy with the BJP’s decision as both, Shiromani Akhali Dal and Shiv Sena have received the verdict on a positive note. And Modi is more likely to bring Jayalalitha too. However, how about Nitish Kumar who cannot stand in front of Modi? In addition allies in the form of Mayawati and Chandrababu Naidu, will Modi be able to get in their support? Besides, will “The HINDUTVA LEADER” be able to make an impact in the states of UP which sends a large number of Member of Parliaments to the Lower House?

It is evident that Modi has left behind him the stain of 2002 riots in Gujarat and has emerged successfully as the pillar of expansion and growth but if he fails in the 2014 election, he may then shrink back as regional leader who could not transit from the local to the national level. However, on the contrary if he creates an impact, then he might get the complete hold of the party and who knows even the nation.

This powerful man has been making news all over the places now – Facebook, Twitter, Newspaper, Magazine, TV. But the million dollar question still remains, will the unstoppable Narendra Modibe able to translate his popularity into votes for his mission – Prime Minister?

Narendra Damodardas Modi is the serving chief minister of the Indian state of Gujarat and has remained the chief minister of the state since 2001 and is a member of the BJP as well as the RSS. He started off as the interim chief minister of the state following the resignation of Keshubhai Patel in 2011 and since then he has remained in office till date. His reign was intitially tarnished by the infamous communal riots in Gujarat in 2002 but since then he has been hailed as a champion of developmental politics as a result of which the state is now regarded as one of the most developed in the country.

Narendra Modi was born on 17th of September in the year 1950 and has 5 other siblings. His family had a grocery store in a village called Vadnagar in Mehsana district in Gujarat. During his school days Modi worked in the canteen of the Gujrat Sate Road Transport Corporation where came into contact with the representatives of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh and by the time he was in university he was a fully fledged member of the RSS. Modi holds a master’s degree in Political Science from Gujarat University.

Although there was far reaching controversy during the elections in 2002 due to the Gujarat riots, the BJP were successful in winning the elections and from then on Modi has remained in power in Gujarat. The highlight of his reign in Gujarat has been the industry friendly policies that the state has adopted in order to encourage more and more Indian and global corporations to come to the state in order to set up their businesses and factories. Modi’s most recent term i.e the third term has been more concentrated on developing the agricultural production of the state of Gujarat which was never really a state that was known in that sector and in that regard the situation has improved with higher produce recorded for many crops.

As the general elections approaches in 2014, Modi has been looked upon as a possible prime ministerial candidate for his party- the BJP. Although it has not been announced yet, Modi has been inducted into the BJP’s Parliamentary Board which is one of the most high profile groups in the party and is responsible for charting the strategy of the party during the elections. Along with that, he has also been made a part of the party’s Central Election Committee.

Indian Marriage Laws (Amendment) Bill – Good, Bad & Ugly

Any legal amendment in favour of women, which tries to redress the inherent gender inequality of our society is automatically cause for cheer – in most cases. So when we heard the news about amendments to Indian Marriage Laws that will entitle the divorced wife to a greater share in her husband’s property and wealth, it seemed to be something to cheer about.

All the news seemed to hail the new “women friendly marriage laws” because they would confer greater economic independence upon women. The fact that the news was met with stiff resistance from certain groups, most typically “Men’s Rights” organisations, seemed to substantiate the fact that Indian men want to retain their economic and social authority within a marriage and that they feel that this law threatens their perceived superiority. So what really is this law? Is it good or is it bad?

What the Marriage Laws (Amendment) Bill proposes

Firstly let’s get one thing clear – this is a Bill (proposal) and not yet an Act (law). At this stage it has got the nod from Cabinet and will be introduced in parliament in the upcoming Monsoon session. This is a proposed amendment to the Hindu Marriage Act, 1955, and the Special Marriage Act, 1954.

The second clarification is that from what we understand the law is gender neutral – it will impact women as well as men.

The proposed law says that if a couple decides to dissolve their marriage, or even if one of them files for and obtains divorce, the wife will get half of everything that the husband owns. Equally the husband gets half of what the wife owns – marital property will be jointly divided. This includes not only what each of the spouses have earned, but also ancestral property – whether already inherited or inheritable.

The bill also recognizes the “irretrievable breakdown of a marriage” as a just grounds for divorce.

Why the proposed law is good

Gross and profound gender inequality is an irrefutable truth of Indian society. Anything that seeks to set aright this imbalance is only to be applauded. In a society where parents still incur backbreaking debt to marry off their daughters and pay dowries that they can ill afford and where women are still sent back to their parents’ homes and even killed for bringing insufficient dowry, this can only be welcomed. Husbands and in-laws will no longer be in a hurry to end a marriage and send a woman back to her parental home because they will stand to lose a lot.

In a traditional matrimonial set up particularly in a patriarchal joint family where a wife has little economic or decision making power, this law would give a woman the courage and wherewithal to walk out of an unhappy or abusive marriage. She can be secure in the knowledge that she and her children will have a roof over their heads and that she will not have to become a burden upon her own parents. As of now social stigma and a lack of economic independence prevent women from walking out of an abusive marriage, forcing them to tolerate traumatic relationships simply because they have no alternative. As of now, Indian women get a raw deal from divorce.

The proposed law recognises a woman’s contribution to a marriage. Typically a woman sacrifices more of her personal ambitions and works more for a family on a day to day basis than does a man.

This law is being called “women friendly” because is the fact that men are far more likely to posses ancestral property than women (this in itself is grossly unfair) so it is far likelier for men than women to have to part with their wealth after a divorce.

Why the proposed law is bad

Men’s rights groups are up in arms against the proposed law because it infringes upon their hitherto unassailable position of economic superiority in a marriage. If this bill becomes law, men stand to lose a lot. As of now, a woman walking out of a marriage meant that a man has the option of remarrying without suffering much economically. But if a woman walks out talking half of all that he owns or will own, this will hurt him where it hurts most – his pocket.

Men seem also to highly resent the fact that this law may be made applicable to Hindus. In other words many men seem to resent the fact the law will not be applicable to Muslims as well (for some reason, the law allowing Muslim men to take as many as four wives where Hindu men cannot has long been a grouse too).

Where the proposed law appears to be unreasonable however, is that it could negatively impact the inheritance of children from a marriage and may also impact aged parents (if a divorced wife takes half of husband’s share in his ancestral property, where will the aged parents go, say opponents of the bill).

Opponents of the bill believe that the law will be subject to gross misuse and that it will be an instrument of blackmail in the hand of the wife. They believe that women will now enter into marriage simply for the purpose of acquiring the wealth of a man and his family; that it will be a weapon of extortion.

There is no doubt that this is a progressive proposal if it becomes law. It remains to be seen whether it will be allowed to be passed.
